Welcome to Navigator Lane - A Small Business Resource Center

How to learn what you need about taxes without digging through several publications, reading difficult forms or spending hours researching.

Leave a trail.

In the early 1800’s Meriweather Lewis and William Clark made a famous expedition to discover the way to the western United States.  Over a hundred years later we are able to trace this famous journey because they left a journal of where they went and what they saw.

Your business is on a journey too.  It is very important, not only to trace its journey but also to scout ahead and to know how to make decisions about where to go next so make a record of it.  It is necessary for avoiding the sharks and pirates (more about them later) that it be done but most of all it is for you.  This is where I am, this is where I have been, this is the map of my journey.  If you can’t keep track of details get someone who can.  It is absolutely crucial to do this.

Does this map need to be beautifully drawn and accurate to the tiniest detail?  It could be and with some people it is but even a crude drawing that is written down can give the most important details.   What matters the most is that it does get written down not who does it or what you write it on or where you keep the record.  If not you are heading into a wilderness with unseen dangers with no map.

Purpose

The purpose of this website is to make the challenges of running a business easier.  We the people of Navigator Lane are trying to present a very complex subject in a more readable and understandable way.  We can give you Small Business Administration handbooks on business with lots of information but they look like and read like a voters pamphlet.   Most of the business owners I know don't read them unless they are desperate.

About

The writers of this site have been preparing taxes, giving business advice, registering new businesses, and explaining to business owners one on one what they need to do since the late seventies.  We are now practicing on you in groups; giving small business seminars and learning to do this website.  We have been known to read IRS manuals as a hobby and have spent entire nights talking about business; what works and what we like.  We are avid readers of business books and have a section to recommend them.  You can purchase them if you like.
